Born in 1955, General Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana is the son of late Major General Aditya Shumsher Rana and a direct descendant of the Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher Rana. A product of the renowned Lawrence School Sanawar, he followed in his father´s footsteps in joining the military. Gen. Rana received his basic training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, United Kingdom. Commissioned into the Nepalese Army in 1974, Rana is an alumnus of the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, USA and the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He has served for 42 illustrious years in the Nepalese Army.

Rana retired from active military duty on 10th September 2015. In the four decades of his service Gen. Rana has observed and managed the transformation of his nation and his organization from a Monarchy to a Federal Republic. A keen golfer and avid ornithologist he also enjoys cross-country downhill mountain biking.
